Oil refining section

The main component of crude oil is a mixture of glycerin three fatty acid esters (commonly knows as neutral oil).In addition to neutral oil, crude oil also contains non glyceride

substances, and can divided

into mechanical impurities, fat soluble impurities and water soluble impurities.

Refine crude oil can remove harmful impurities for edible, storage and industrial production. Such as protein, phospholipids, gossypol, mucus, moisture should remove, and beneficial impurities such as tocopherol will hold.

Oil refining process: degumming—de-acid—decolor—deodorization—finished oil

A. Degumming

Oil widely use water degumming and acid degumming, and edible oil use water degumming, industrial oil use acid degumming. Use hydrophilic of phospholipids and other gum soluble, adding a certain amount of hot water or dilute alkali, salt, phosphoric acid these electrolyte solution into hot crude oil under stripping, it makes the gum soluble impurities absorption and condensation, and then settlement separate.

In this process, phosphoric are mainly condensates and settlement, and others which combined with phosphoric such as protein, glycosyl diacylglycerol, mucus and trace metal ions etc.

B. De-acid

This process can remove free fatty acid in crude oil. Commonly use Alkali remove acid, though adding alkaline aqueous solution in oil and carry out neutralization of chemical reaction to reach de-acid.

D. Decolor

After degumming and de-acid, we can get grade 3 or grade 4 oil, but if want top grade oil(salad oil, cosmetic oil, oil for light colored paint, soap and margarine) need to remove color inside oil. The most widely use is adsorption method.

Material with strong adsorption capacity (acid activated clay, bleaching clay and activated carbon) will be adding into oil, in the heating case adsorb and remove pigments and other impurities(protein, mucus, resin and soap etc) in oil.

D. Deodorization

Natural oil has its own special smell (odor), and in the process of oil production will also produce odor (such as solvent smell, soap taste and earthy etc).Deodorization means process to remove special smell of oil. There are many method for deodorization, best is vacuum steam deodorization. It uses superheated steam (vacuum) to remove flavor substances in the oil.
